Jan. 8th, 2010 @ 09:14 pm Okami Cosplay Suit Help
Photobucket

So, I'm planning to make a suit of Tabegami, one of the brush gods from the game Okami. What I want to know is how would people go about creating the wings/fur on the shoulders and tail? I want them to look like hair rather than stuffed fur as they do on other Okami suits I've seen... I've thought of using horsehair or a synthetic equivalent but I have no knowledge of the stuff.

Anyone have any tips?

Jan. 8th, 2010 @ 11:23 am Eye See You!
So reading up on a recent post about eye colours, I began to think about transparency + Colour. I was reminded of those stain-glass painting kits you could get as a kid where the "glass" was really just plastic and the paints were see-through so that the sun could shine through. I was wondering if you could use those kinds of paints for eyes. I thought the vision would be better, and then if you had, say, a character with a blind eye, you could white out the whole thing (or any other colour) and still be able to see through it.
Does anyone think it would work? Or do you think it would be TOO transparent? Or that maybe the colour would not show up due to a dark background?

Just a suggestion! ^_^

Jan. 8th, 2010 @ 03:32 am What to wear under fullsuit; would this work?
Current Mood: curious
Heya, fursuit!

I checked the memories about what to wear under fullsuits (as I'm a total n00b about all this cuz I'm just getting my very first fullsuit this month, woo!) and I noticed that the link to the diveskin that many had suggested is no longer working. :(

That said, I was doing some research and I was just curious...

1) I know lycra seems to be the typical material used, but what about spandex bodysuits? (Is that the same thing?); would this particular one work alright? (The price seems right!)
3) Or would a lycra diveskin suit like this one be better?
4) Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you so much in advance!! :)

[Edit]: [info]neouka suggested this one, which looks pretty good! Anyone else have any experiences with the Sea Elite Sport?
[Edit x2]: Holy cow, you guys are amazing!! Thank you SO MUCH for all of the wonderful suggestions! I really appreciate it! :D

Jan. 7th, 2010 @ 10:54 pm Latex on Foamies
Does anyone know if foamies sheets can be successfully coated with liquid latex? I want to make some rather large cartoony-teeth with them, and I know the foamies alone won't be stable enough.

Jan. 7th, 2010 @ 09:35 pm Possible Commission
So I am wanting to possibly commission a pair of digigrade legs. I tried my hand at making a pair for Butterdog and feel as though I failed horribly. I could provide the DTD legs and the body suit to attach the foam to. I tried and never got the shape down and just made my legs look fatter than usual and like I have massive calves of doom. I would want to use these legs for several different species so just the general shape would be great, doesnt have to look like a specific kind of animal legs. Or another possibility would be if there was a fursuiter in the area that makes costume that wouldnt mind some how helping me. I live in the DC metro area if that helps. Any responses would be helpful.

Thank you!

I usually make my eyes out of white Sterilite bowls, but the suit I am currently working on I needs yellow eyes.  To all of those builders out there that have made yellow eyes, what did you use and where did you purchase from? Any help or advise would be terrific!  Thanks!

Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 11:20 pm is it just me or has USPS gotten slower?
i know this is hardly fursuit related but those who do commissions do ship things so i am hoping to see if there is a pattern here or that i can at least get a little reassurance:

the last few things to come me through the US post office have been absurdly slow.
i got a pair of hand paws from some one who lives within an hours drive me and the tracking information said the box was at the south sac sorting station for a full WEEK.
now i have been waiting on a bodysuit to be altered for a better fit for FC and it was mailed out the 29th and is still not here, and this customer is within a 12 hours drive of me, it has been 8 days and it should have been 3 days (it was 3 days from me to him but i used fedex)...and it is STILL NOT HERE D:

needless to say i am worried it got lost, i am hoping the huge delay on the hand paws is a good sign the bodysuit will show up too...but i am still worried  :(
to make a whole new body between now and FC would be near impossible as i would need another dummy sent which takes time and have to order the fur which takes shipping time, all that on top of the time needed to build the actual body and do the digigrade legs and all the air brushing...plus there would be the extra aggrivation over the fact the body would have been usable as-is for the con VS lost in the mail.

i HATE shipping things D:
i feel like it tempts fate every time!

edit: how much do you wanna bet it will be on my front porch tommorrow now that i ranted about it? hmm

EDIT EDIT: it arrived today!

Well hello again XD

So when I started making fursuits, I sort of started backwards. I started with the harder things first, such as a moving jaw, so I can't figure out how to make a static jaw >.< I have theories, but I just can't picture it! With moving jaws, I make a hrm... ah! I can show you the way I make head bases.

http://community.livejournal.com/fursuit/1334914.html

I make them like the first part, with the balaclava and the foam around the head.

I can figure out what the jaw would look like. If you see on those head bases, I make a part of foam that goes under the chin, with elastic on that.  With a static jaw, would there not be  a part that goes under the chin?

Sorry I hope you can understand what I'm asking, I'm having trouble explaining it haha

Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 05:48 pm Fixing the head.
I have a Styrofoam head shape, I found it at school a few months ago. It's handy, however, there's one problem. It's extra small. My head is small. So, it's TOO small. The beak form is too small for my face (it's okay, the clay isn't going on my face, so it'll work out in the end anyway) and it makes the hats that I put on it very wavy and lumpy because it doesn't fit right.

Any ideas on how to make the head the right size? I was thinking duct-tape, but that gets sticky with time and the last thing I want is to send someone a head or a hat that has stick on the inside! Ideas?

Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 05:36 pm Fox and lamb head progress
Just thought I would show everyone what I've been working on as of late. The fox head is unfinished at this point. I'm waiting on the commissioner's feedback before I smooth it out and clean it up. The lamb head I am considering done. If you feel like giving critiques feel free! But I may not be able to change anything depending on that the commissioners say.

Jan. 5th, 2010 @ 11:37 pm Idaho fursuit builders?
Current Mood: hopeful
Hi there! I hope this is acceptable for this community, but I was wondering if there are any fursuit builders in Idaho state? Preferably in northern Idaho, or along the Washington/Idaho border. (I'm in Palouse County) I'd love to meet up with other fursuit builders and collaborate some, share ideas/techniques, etc if others are willing. ^__^

Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 12:46 am Fursuit Foam Question
Hey everyone, I have been reading up here and have gathered alot of useful information.  I have a few questions though and thought maybe someone might be able to help.

1) I am making a fursuit with foam to enhance the muscle form.  Most of the foam will be added in the shoulder, chest and back area.  I was wondering what would be a good foam firmness to use to simulate muscles.  In addition, on top of this suit I will be wearing armor that weighs quite a bit. (~30 lbs)  I have read up on ILD and would like some input from the community before purchasing some foam.  My line of thinking is to get the firmest I can get to minimize the deformation under the weigh of the armor, but I don't want it so firm I can't move.  Any suggestions?

2) I found some foam at JoAnn's Fabric, but it was $70 for a 5"x24"x36" piece.  Does anyone know any location or website that sells it cheaper than that?  Or is JoAnn's about the right price?  I need something pretty firm I think.

Thank you for you time!

Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 12:16 am A little help with hair...
Current Mood: creative
Hey all! ^^ I'm a total noob to fursuit making so I've been perusing this place and getting lots of tips and ideas for when I finally jump into making my first suit! However, I haven't been able to find much about one particular thing...so here I am asking it! What do you guys use for long hair on a fursuit, and where can you get it? The reason I ask is...this is the character I'm looking to make a suit of! Her bangs are the only thing I'm really unsure of how to do as far as what kind of materials to use. I've heard horsehair is sometimes used for longer manes/tails, or longer pile furs, but can you find fake hair in certain colors, or do you usually dye it yourself? Is it better to weft hair like this into the fur (a thing I have no idea how to do...) or what? Any info or help I can get is much appreciated. XD

Hello againn :]

So I'm trying to figure out how to put fans in my suit heads.  Is it possible to put a fan in a balaclava/foam base head? If so, where would you put it? and how would you put it in there?  I'm aware of Matrices tutorial, but that only says how to put it in a mesh base head.

If anyone has ideas, or knows how to do this that's be great!
